From the second half of 2020 to now, a variety of semiconductor components in the world are in varying degrees of supply shortage. There are many reasons for the shortage of semiconductor components.
First of all, the semiconductor industry is an industry that needs the close cooperation of large and small enterprises in the global industrial chain. COVID-19 began to influence the capacity supply of semiconductor components in early 2020. The tension between China and the US has further disrupted the supply chain balance, and thus caused chain reaction.
Secondly, the higher than expected growth of automotive electronics, 5g, IOT, it products and personal electronic products is also another reason for the global shortage of semiconductors.
More importantly, the expectation of shortage of semiconductor components has triggered panic stock, further expanding the scope and depth of impact of shortage of semiconductor components. More types of chips are in shortage and more industries are affected.
According to the latest forecast of omdia, due to the tight production capacity of wafer manufacturing and packaging test, the overall semiconductor demand growth in 2021 is higher than expected, and the current shortage of semiconductor components may continue. Among them, the shortage of key semiconductor components such as MCU, vehicle specification chip, power component, PMIC, display driver chip, analog chip, CIS, WiFi and Bluetooth chip is more serious, and the shortage may continue until the middle of 2022.
A variety of semiconductor components maintained steady growth
The rapid growth of new energy vehicles will promote the sustained and rapid growth of vehicle specification semiconductor market. The global vehicle specification semiconductor market will be about US $41.2 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach US $72.1 billion in 2024.
Although global smartphone shipments have declined in 2020 and 2021, with the wide popularity of mobile multi camera solutions and the pull of its automotive and industrial markets, it is expected that the global COMS image sensor market will grow from US $15.1 billion to US $21.5 billion from 2019 to 2024.
Driven by the market of automotive electronics, IOT and consumer products, the global MCU market will maintain stable growth from 2019 to 2024, and the global market will grow from US $17.5 billion to US $19.3 billion.
Power semiconductor has become a hot spot in the market
Power semiconductors mainly include power discrete devices (transistors, diodes, MOSFETs,...), power modules (IGBT modules, IPM modules, PIM modules,...) and power ICs (power ICs, AC-DC, DC-DC regulators,...).
Power semiconductors are widely used downstream. Automotive electronics, industrial control, solar energy, wind power, data center, computer, lighting, rail transit and consumer electronics are inseparable from power semiconductors. Omdia predicts that the global power semiconductor market will reach US $45.5 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach US $55.3 billion by 2024.
In the downstream market of power semiconductors, new energy vehicles are undoubtedly one of the hot spots in the market. The global output of new energy vehicles continued to rise, and the proportion of new energy vehicles in passenger vehicles also increased rapidly. With the emergence of new car manufacturers such as Tesla, BYD, Weilai, Xiaopeng and ideal, traditional car manufacturers are not willing to be weak. Manufacturers such as GM, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Renault, Nissan Mitsubishi alliance and BMW have also increased the output of new energy vehicles. The power semiconductor market has also increased with the increase of the output of new energy vehicles.
At the same time, the value of power discrete devices, power ICs and electric vehicle electronic control modules for vehicles, especially new energy vehicles, is becoming higher and higher. Among the major automotive systems, the value of some power devices in powertrain is the largest, followed by chassis & safety, body and convention, as well as infotainment and ADAS systems. The powertrain subsystem of new energy passenger vehicles relies on IGBT electronic control module to provide strong power.
The application of SiC devices in automobile has also become a hot spot in the market. Tesla uses SiC MOSFET in its high-end models, BYD uses SiC MOSFET in Han EV 4WD version, and Yutong also uses SiC module in its commercial vehicles. Although the SiC market is very hot, it is still in the early stage of application, and the main obstacle is that the cost is still high.
